Background

Ubiquitous sensors and actuators, devices, networks and information are paving the way towards a smart world in which computational intelligence is distributed throughout the physical environment to provide reliable and relevant services to goods and people. The smart world, starting with smart things such as smart objects, smart cities, smart manufacture and smart systems, will eventually encompass all aspects of the physical world and the social world. This smart world is set to be the next important stage in human history. We have to be aware of the essential problems and crucial issues affecting this development in truly building the smart world that benefits humanity, and simultaneously safeguards the natural environment for sustainable development and evolution.

Objective

The Technical Committee on Smart World (SWTC) is intended to establish a collaborative and active platform to gather scientists, researchers and engineers who share common interests in smart related computing technologies and applications. The objectives are threefold: (1) to promote research, development, education and application on the wide scope of smart world; (2) to bridge the gap between researchers primarily focused on computational intelligence and researchers in smart things as well as between academic studies and industrial innovations; (3) to organize a series of smart world related activities including the IEEE Smart World Congress.

Scope

The Smart World TC primarily aims at porting computational intelligence techniques in resource-constrained systems embedded in physical objects interacting with the environment through sensors and actuators. The scope of the Smart World TC mainly covers four aspects:

  • Smart Objects and Interactions

Smart chips, sensors, devices, wearables, appliances, plants, materials, etc.

Smart software, OS, programming, tools, interfaces, control, reliability, etc.

  • Smart Systems and Services

Smart sensor networks, personal/body networks, programming models, etc.

Smart service, cloud, big data, IoT, cyber-physical systems, green systems, etc.

  • Smart Environments and Applications

Smart home, office, building, campus, factory, farm, city, urban, country, etc.

Smart healthcare, transportation, grid, energy, manufacture, agriculture, etc.

  • Smart Things related to Personalization and Social Aspects

Mobile social computing, crowd sensing, human modeling and mining, etc.

Smart machines, cars, robots, cyborgs, and their social intelligence

Personalized services, security, privacy, safety, affect and legal issues
